BERGEN TOWN AND HILLS
Tender cow cheese and jam on a pancake, fjord cruises, Twilight forest, Valhalla. So that’s it, thanks for reading.
You are not sold on it yet? Okay, let’s dive in for more.
Arriving at Bergen International airport is a treat itself. It’s actually an introductory sample of what you are gonna experience. When you look out of the window a mirrored airplane comes into sight reflected by the crystal blue water down under. Sea transforming into thousands of small diamonds, fields of lakes and straits over the country.
Halfway I expected that we will land on water and the terminal going to be some wooden nordic temple. Of course it was the total opposite, very modern, artsy and straight clean designed structure.
Underneath the airport there is a train station. Fairly frequent trains will take you in 30 minutes into the city centre. No train changes.
We arrived to the central station around 11pm at night, right? Nah! It was still sunny and frankly quite refreshing weather. We looked at each other in bafflement because there were people in the streets. And I am not talking about drunken teens. People with strollers, families even elderly people. I realised we’re not gonna sleep much here.
Marina
Bergen is special when it comes to weather. The most rainy town in Europe. That fact can ‘ruin’ holiday for unprepared tourists that come in the rainy season. One could not blame them. There is a sunny season only May – June and still you should have an umbrella prepared.
Our airbnb seemed like the best option. The owner was promoting a new flat, 10 minutes walking distance to both the centre and central station. Since she got a tremendous reviews on her previous ones the price was unbeatable.
On the account of points of interests there is so many and while writing this I am already planning to repeat that trip to see more.
Fish market
First of all, fish market. You are in a harbour area, fresh fish all around you. If you are like me and eating salmon once a year is your ‘fish maximum’ you’ll be surprised how fresh out of the water and immediately prepared fish could taste. Btw. try fish cakes…
Fjords. What a thrill. What a beautiful scene and top take-a-pic location. But which company and ride to choose? It really comes down to how much time, money and expectations you have.
You can go full day ride around the coast. You can choose a 2-day trip, possibly including a railroad. We’ve chosen a half day trip to the mainland town of Mo and back.
Beforehand we went some grocery shopping so we won’t have our stomach float on the cruise which brings me to the next topic.
You might have heard that already. Scandinavia, in comparison to the rest of the Europe is a pretty expensive place.
Since we are coffee lovers and all day long walkers our expenses comprised of sandwiches, sweet rolls, cinnamon buns, fish market quickies, 7 eleven snacks and barrels of
Best carrot cake in the world
On our last day we wanted to taste something that is on a plate so we found this great reviewed restaurant/beer place. Meatballs with potatoes were absolutely amazing. Since we both do not drink beer we’re very hesitant but the waiter taunted us into cherry beer. It was just what we needed even though we didn’t know it back then.
There is one treat every tourist in Norway should get. A cinnamon bun. A broad selection of types and shops on every corner made it hellishly easy to survive only on them for the rest of our journey. That was actually our onboard food on the way to see the fjords.
A tip: “best cinnamon bun? A vanilla bun :D”
So we ate, drank coffee and ate by the fjords. We needed to walk some more. That’s why we took the funicular to the mount Fløyen. A whole new world.
If you have seen Twilight movie and if you like it, like
Edward nowhere to be found…
Lakes and walking trails catch eye of every looking for action traveler but also all those looking for a healthy stroll.
